[Fri Oct 1st - 5pm PDT] PilotEdge's 10-year Birthday Bash!

Since then, the network has expanded to cover nearly the entire western half of the United States. We were thrilled to have hosted our second SimVenture event in July of this year, wit...

Re: VFR - Methods for Choosing the Lowest Cruising Altitude
Hi Massimo,
The technique you're using is a good one. Another one I was taught was to find the highest terrain/obstacle with 5nm either side of my planned track and then add 500 ft and round up to the nearest appropriate VFR cruising altitude.

Re: X Plane's GNS 530 Minimums Capability
Massimo,
IRL, the only approved methods of vertical navigation on an approach are via WAAS or baro-VNAV. It is highly unlikely the Baron would have baro-VNAV, so if the GNS530 is not WAAS capable then you would be limited to LNAV only minimums.

Re: CAT-1/CAT-2: Airport Error/Utility of Flight Simulation
Re my reference above to using a marine chart to help plan a flight across Long Island Sound, here’s a related observation about the CAT-1 exercise... I don’t believe that a competent flight instructor would approve a flight plan submitted by a student pilot that called for the over-mountain routes...

Re: Departure and taxing questions
As to your second question: if the controller gave you the runway crossing instruction with your initial taxi clearance then you do not need further permission from him/her. If no crossing instruction was received then hold short of the runway. There are only 3 times where you automatically switch f...

Re: Cat-10 LAX tower question
Yes, best practice is 360's outside of the Bravo until you can get a word in. Also, pull back on the throttle a little if you hear it's busy as you approach SMO/HHR.

Re: Departure question
It's actually a fantastic question, and one that doesn't have a very consistent answer. The AIM does not address downwind departures specifically and there seems to a large variation in local expectations. As controllers, we should probably be giving you further instruction as to what we want you to...
