Re: Randomisation of the Ratings
Personally, it's up to the learner to apply the knowledge that is learned in any of the rating exams and apply them to "actual' flying situations. Then why even have the exams? Why not just post the briefings and instruct the user to "try these on your own"? Think of the ratings as t...

Re: Randomisation of the Ratings
No two ratings are ever identical. The script is only a sample of what could be expected. While your statement is technically true, the overwhelming bulk of the script is still valid when the exam is taken. I've done the ratings and encountered no significant departures, if any, from the briefings....

Randomisation of the Ratings
I've been meaning to post about this topic for a while but never really got around to it. A recent discussion on a Twitch stream prompted me to put aside some time. One day I was flying on the network, I heard someone taking one of the V-rating exams. The controller had issued an instruction, to whi...
Re: TCAS
Earlier in the year, I had written some code to pull down traffic data provided by the PE client. (It is output in ForeFlight's string-based format, but I converted it to the GDL90 format, the standard used by all portable ADS-B devices.) My plan was to combine the data with some mathematics to deve...

Re: [Sept 24 | Saturday 4PM ]Rancho Rage Roll-Out
I've only poked around in the X-Plane navigation database a few times, but I'm thinking that it should be possible to drum up an RNAV approach for the X-Plane 430. It's really a matter of putting together something that satisfies those instrument procedure design requirements. Anybody up for it? By ...

Re: SOCAL to get satellite ATC system. LA Times
This is a little bit unrelated, but I really hate when mainstream media reports on aviation - or any technically-oriented topic for that matter. It makes you wonder what other stuff they get completely wrong. The article makes it seem like there's some kind of orbital monitoring and control of aircr...

Re: Flight Chops - SFO Bravo flight
" Zero functional value..." - really? I'm an old pilot so maybe that means I'm not too bold ;) but any advice from pilots who are professional in their approach to flying I value. Don't care if I've heard it a hundred times before. There is usually knowledge to be gained at some level, or...

Re: Approach Plates - Minima #'s
This exact lost comm scenario has come up a couple times here before. The MZB 084 radial is not flyable, so you're left without a great way of getting to an IAF without GPS. In a true lost comm situation, if you're set on doing this approach, I don't think it's unreasonable to fly the airway from M...

Re: Flight Chops - SFO Bravo flight
Honestly, I wasn't all that impressed by this video. I've seen nicer flights around the Bay Area on Youtube that weren't riddled with promotional material and shallow (non-)advice. I actually used to like FlightChops from a training and safety perspective, but after the monetised his content, it wen...

Re: GPS issues in June in Socal
One thing I've been thinking about recently was modelling the GPS constellation and availability in X-Plane using current almanac data plus a simple environmental model. I know exactly what to do on the GPS side of things, but I don't yet know what I can do on the X-Plane side. Maybe I will post som...
