On IFR—When to change altimeter setting
You’re flying IFR into an uncontrolled airport. Enroute ATC asks that you report when you have the local weather and requests what approach you’d like. Still 50 miles from the IAF you pick up the ASOS and decide on the ABC approach and note that the local altimeter is .4-.5 inches below (-400-500 fe...

Re: SKY High 2 questions
Understood. But you're assuming that while on the ground at SKX you know what the tops are en route. Skew Ts may give you an educated guess but not a definite answer (unless there is a pilot report). If you may end up having to pick up an IFR route clearance over TAS anyway, why not file for the who...

Re: SKY High 2 questions—Leg two filing instructions
I have an issue with the filing options for the second leg. They are as follows: File IFR from KSKX to TAS, or File IFR from KSKX to TAS and include “VFR on top” in the remarks, or Do not file IFR, simply call ATC and request a “climb to VFR on top at the Taos VOR” and let them issue the clearance. ...

Re: Why say "tree" for "three" and "fife" for "five"
Though they are "English" words, the choices were made with the world in mind. The final choice of code words for the letters of the alphabet and for the digits was made after hundreds of thousands of comprehension tests involving 31 nationalities. They were actually made because VHF radio...

Why say "tree" for "three" and "fife" for "five"
As English is the universal language of aviation, it may seem odd that controllers on Pilot Edge say "tree" for "three", "fower" for "four", "fife" for "five" and "niner" for "nine." After all, how would any who speaks f...

Re: LOC 28L procedure into KMRY
Whether in the real world or in practice, what the reported conditions are and what you experience flying the approach may be different. There are times the conditions are reported below minimums but you will pick up the runway environment in time to land. Conversely, the conditions may be reported ...

Western Expansion Drones?
Just wondering: Have the skies over the Western US been filled with drones as in ZLA?

Western American Expansion: Firtst Thoughts
Did two flights today in an MU-2: TTD-SEA and ASE-DEN. Busy time of day. Controllers in both cases faced heavier workload. This, along with and some expected snarls getting clearances and getting frequecy changes, the higher workload and greater chatter enhances realism. Add the vast expansion in ge...
