Re: Approach gate should be mentioned in I-1 rating descript
Yesterday I nearly failed my second attempt to get the I-1 rating simply because I was not fully established on the localizer (LOC) and glide slope (G/S) for the instrument landing system (ILS) approach latest one mile before the final approach fix (FAF). I suggest that the description for the I-1 ...

Re: The IFR chart lightning bolt confusion
A "lightning bolt," or "zig-zags" centered amid an airway or a route indicates that the airway or route is not drawn to scale. A lightning bolt on the profile view of an instrument approach procedure (IAP) indicates a precision final approach fix (PFAF). A lightning bolt in the p...

Re: Pop up IFR clearance
Kevin, Years ago, that was true, I'd frequently have ATC ask for name and phone number for the tapes but I haven't had that happen at all in recent years, in a wide range of airspace. Instead, I'm just cleared to the destination, direct (this is usually within close proximity of the destination whe...

Re: KSNA ILS 20R VOR discrepancy
Ryan is correct. While you can identify SAGER as the intersection of the SLI049R and PDZ256R, doing so would not be prudent because identifying SAGER using the SLI049R and the localizer is more practical and precise. The goal of identifying SAGER is to know when to initiate the hold in lieu of the p...
Re: Holds
The easiest way I ever learned holds was on a checkride, believe it or not. The DPE on my CFI-I ride wanted to share his tips for easily teaching a hold. 1. Draw a cross on a sheet of paper. The intersection of the two lines is your holding fix. The lines represent your inbound course towards the in...

Re: Question about intercepting a radial
The simplest answer I can give you is to request a new heading. There are virtually no cases in which you can deviate from an assigned heading or route without approval from ATC.
