I fly almost exclusively in Socal and agree with your choice.

Personally I would get ASN first it is brilliant for real world weather and checking if VFR is on the cards. I think there's a 7 day trial and I bought it after 1 day. It's also good if you want to tweak the weather.

I have the REX products but frankly don't know if they are installed or not at present!

Enjoy.

What are people's opinions in buying REX essentials now or buying REX textures direct and soft clouds now and then Active Sky Next later?
Honestly, I'd do it the other way round as better weather generation will add more training value than prettier clouds. REX sales are regular enough that you won't loose out by not buying it now, unlike the current Orbx sale which is the precursor to a price rise.

I will definitely try the active sky next free trial!
Also is there a way to set a button on my joystick as the PTT wig using FSUIPC (I don't want to have to pay €28) or joy2key as I use scroll lock for tracker precision mode.

My two cents: REX Tex Direct with Soft Clouds is a no brainier, and I find the Obx SoCal makes flying on PE visually remarkable even with the performance hit. The details are just really great.

As for ATC, I posted some resources here that I found useful when I was starting: http://www.ontheglideslope.net/2016/04/ ... -talk-atc/

Enjoy Socal.
Depending on your PC you may need to reduce settings.
In my case I find autogen very low helps frame rate.

ASN was a game-changer for me and the FSX install. I run XP and FSX:SE and the ASN addition keeps the weather more balanced, even though my XP isn't as pretty.

I am now using Orbx SoCal, REX 4 with soft clouds and ASN and the environment and weather look stunning. Sadly my trackir is jerky when running at less than 60FPS and so I have had to reduce my autogen to medium and so low down I don't find the Orbx textures as nice as I expected (I wasn't overly impressed flying in and out of John Wayne Airport last night).

In addition to this, I get quite a few microstuters and some larger stutters now and again. I also get a large stutter or pause when the wheels touch down on the runway when landing. Sadly, all of these issues are hindering my FSX experience.

I need to do some serious tweaking and bug finding before I invest more money in it.

IMO your CPU isn't likely to be holding you back. The specs are quite good.

IMO unless there are other "things" installed on your PC such as video capture, there's more than enough main memory. Also remember that at it's core, FSX is still a 32 bit single core application.

Also, Switching from a i5 to i7 CPU isn't likely to give the "best bang for the buck". In general, fewer faster cores will perform better for sim applications. Stick to an i5 for dedicated sim PC's.

The GTX770 VRAM at 2GB should be reviewed especially with the considerable "eye candy" loaded on your sim. VRAM eating monsters......

As a reminder, FSX and X-plane don't support multiple GPU's. So if looking for options, don't look towards the SLI path.

60+ FPS is a high goal. Possible but difficult. Look at reducing AA levels as well.

So it would seem that some serious tweaking is in your future.

Or........ one of those band new shinny GTX1080's.......

Welcome to the "totally immersive" flight sim experience. Or also titled, "how I did my part to support the high end PC gaming industry". Note, many of us struggle with "having enough" PC to run what is necessary. Not easy to find the right balance. You are not alone.

A couple of friends have ordered the 1080 and they arrive tomorrow and I am very jealous! I am tempted as my aim is to move to VR once 4K 210deg+ FoV VR goggles are available and have been optimised to work on home PCs not just super computers like now.

I have been playing DCS for a year and I can run it 60 FPS with pretty high settings and lots of eye candy.

At the moment, I am trying to find a way to stop micro stutters when banking as the scenery seems to move across the screen in micro discreet, yet noticeable, movements. Any ideas?

Another issue is that I am running FSX on an HDD as my 250GB SSD is already full so this could induce micro stutters when textures are loaded.
