For anybody joining the flight this evening that hasn't done their flight planning yet, please note that the route Cyrus has suggested:
BZA V458 OCN V23 SLI
which tracks V458 from BZA to OCN isn't a straight line. If you try to go direct from BZA to OCN you'll violate at least two restricted areas and cross at least three MOAs (military operating areas). V458 is designed to route around all of this and has several bends in it. If you're programming a flight plan into your GPS, useful waypoints that keep you on V458 are:
BZA IPL KUMBA JLI OCN
V23 from OCN to SLI is a straight shot, and SLI is an IAF for the full ILS Rwy 19R approach into KSNA.

Just checked the PE map and I'm DYING here not being able to join you guys. What an awesome turnout!

That was fun! Also, thanks to whoever joined us early in the pattern on 21L, that was a pleasant surprise!
I recorded the flight on DVD only to discover the recorder was set to record one hour max. We filled that up early before the action started. Of course that means we have to do it all again

Hey Cyrus,
Really enjoyed that flight. I was up on chat, glad you were able to clear up radio problem. PE staff did a hell of a job tonight. We kept them on their game. Will stay tuned for more flights, schedule permitting of course. Would've liked to have seen everyone on PEAware feature.
Regards, Pat

Cyrus,
You did an excellent job organizing this fly-togeather and attracting a lot of pilots. I joined in late, so I picked up flight following from Santa Monica to John Wayne, but I still had a blast.

Jeff, sorry you missed it. I'm sure someone will plan another one soon (and if no one else does, I certainly will! that should be incentive enough right there for someone else to get cracking ).
Justin, how do you record it? If software based, doesn't that hit your fps pretty hard? Will you be posting what you did get? Either way, it's a nice idea...
So here are the two screenshots I managed to get (click the thumbnail for a larger version):
First is an early photo taken along V458, right around the turn to Julian:
Second photo is me trying to catch a snap of the Jetstream that just wasn't aware of the Fly-Out, but just happened to be flying it as well. I think he's about 1k high and was zooming past us at around 300kts (to our 150kts). He's right at the top of the bottom screen:
(Yes, I flew in the day... sue me! This flight simply had too much wonderful scenery that I wanted to take in)
Thanks again to everyone for joining - and I apologize for all the changes in the thread. But, as others noted, hopefully the discussion was useful.
Looking forward to the next one. And anyone who fancies taking the baton, please feel free........

Thanks for organising the event Cyrus and the input on the discussion from everyone was really helpful. I flew in the day too and took some screenshots that I'll post soon. There was so much happening at John Wayne that I forgot to take any when the weather deteriorated slightly as we approached.
That was definitely more fun with everyone joining in so I'll be sure to keep an eye on the forum for another fly in.

Cyrus,
The B-52 simulator has 4 cameras mounted in it for live recording of the sim to a dedicated DVD recorder, as shown in this previous PE video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_phWaHQgrQ
Its not connected to the computer so there is no frame rate hit.
It would be fun to have a client computer just for recording the outside view of the aircraft
Since had to drive to the sim I now have a half hour drive home, so until next time, good night to all.

Ugh. The PE system reset that occurred towards the end of the fly-in apparently caused my flight not to be recorded in PEAware. Shucks.

No worries. I'm all about the next one too....Jack wrote:Thanks for organising the event Cyrus and the input on the discussion from everyone was really helpful.
Wow. Cool stuff. If I had one of those, my family would never see me....dc8flightdeck wrote:Cyrus,

So here's the last photo I have from the event... my chicken scratch for the night. The "As Filed" routing threw me off a little at first, but it was comforting to hear other pilots getting the same, optimized departure instructions - at least I knew I wasn't going crazy
